Agnes Hsu-Tang Ph.D.

Agnes Hsu-Tang, Ph.D., is an archaeologist and works in cultural heritage protection and rescue. She was an International Expert to UNESCO, 2006–14, and advised the Cultural Property Advisory Committee under President Obama. A former Mellon Fellow at Cambridge University and Stanford University, she has authored academic publications and white papers. Prior to graduate studies, she served under the late US Ambassador James R.
Lilley. In 2021 Dr. Hsu-Tang became the first American of Asian heritage to be elected board chair of an American history museum — the New-York Historical Society — New York’s first museum founded in 1804, where she helped establish the Tang Academy of American Democracy. She was a managing director on The Metropolitan Opera board, 2014–21, and chaired its Nominating Committee. She is a founding advisory committee member of the Artist Protection Fund at the Institute of International Education. She was the bi-lingual host of two documentary series: an archaeology series on History Channel Asia (2011–13), and a contemporary art series on Discovery Channel Asia (2014–15). Dr. Hsu-Tang co-founded the Hsu-Tang Library at Oxford University Press, which was launched in late October 2023. She is a recipient of the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Award.
